Summary in Hindi

Summary in English

In this essay, the author P.S. Ramanujam has satirised on the consequences of our love for the English language. The author has made an attempt to highlight the suspense caused by the use of abbreviations of words from reading and writing to names of villages to names of kings and to even names of Gods. The author suggests that in order to retain the identity of our name and place of birth we should give up our prejudice towards abbreviating words.

Nowadays names of cities are being contracted to their initials. This is a matter of grave concern. Because of these initials, names of many cities of Karnataka have been losing their Kannadaness, identity and existence. There was a time when initials were attached only before the names of people. Today we are using initials even for the names of cities. It is difficult to understand whether this tendency to abbreviate is human nature or it is some new fashion. The author remarks humorously that it is possible that the PWD Department must have got small boards prepared and hence shortened the names of villages to fit the size of the boards.

It is worthwhile to examine the names of a few villages that are victims of the process of shortening of names. “Tirumakoodalu Narsipura’ has now become ‘T Narsipura’. This could misguide a researcher in the future. If by chance English were to cease to exist in our country, it would be difficult to find out the meaning of these initials. Much research will have to be made and the results would be amazing. The researchers may arrive at the conclusion that perhaps ‘T Narsipura’ acquired its name because of the tea plantations that existed there.

The author asks us to imagine that there is a village called “Karidoddana Palya’. It would become ‘K.D. Palya’. Sometime later this would be transformed into ‘Kedipalya’ which will disgrace the village. In the future, the researchers will come to the conclusion that this village acquired the name because the village had kids or rowdies. Thus the village will get a bad name unnecessarily.

Now hear the story of ‘Hole Narsipura’. This village with the humming sound of the Hemavathi river and majestic temple of Narasimha has today become ‘H.N. Pura’. Gradually this may be changed as ‘Hechchipura’ (worthless village) or ‘Echchampura’ and legends will grow around it. The river Hemavathi, Narasimha everything is sunk in the English initials and their beauty survives only in the stones of the Public Works Department. This is also the misfortune of the residents of Hole Narsipura, the Hemavathi river and Narasimha.

Take the example of ‘Chikkanayakana Halli’. Today it has become ‘C.N. Halli’. In future, it may become ‘Seeyana Halli’. Similarly, Channarayapattana has become ‘C.R. Pattana’. ‘Heggadadevanakote’ is now ‘H.D. Kote’. Hiding the names of leaders, kings, and gods that have ruled this place in the form of initials is quite painful.

‘Kalamuddana Doddi’ is now called ‘K.M. Doddi’. One cannot say when ‘Shravanabelagola’ will become ‘S.B. Gola’ and ‘Vijayapura’ will become ‘V. Pura’. When we use the initials for the names that are made of two or three words it becomes an abbreviation. It seems nowadays people have no time to call long names. There was a time when people had such long names as ‘Tirumale Srinivasavarada Ranganatha Deshika Thathachar’. If you were to start calling the name in the morning, it would be evening by the time you completed it. Because of a shortage of time, we are now naming children by such short names as Mohan, Sandeep and so on. But the names of cities and villages could have been left as they were.

Perhaps even Englishmen may not have distorted the names of their villages in this manner. This is one topic in which we have gone ahead of them and we have reduced the names and made them look like small formulae. In this world of names, we are making the original names disappear according to the theory ‘this world is false’.

The author feels that to make our dealings easy, abbreviating will become the style in the future. For instance, if anyone says, “I have made a resolution for which I will go to T.D. and see V.C.”, we should not be surprised. Its meaning is “I will go to Tirupati temple and see Venkatachalapathi”. Similarly, if someone says, “I will go to M. Kote and see C.R. Swamy” we must not be confused. Its meaning is, “I will go to Melkote and see Cheluvaraya Swamy”. If someone says, “V.G. Swamy’s Abhisheka has to be arranged”, we should understand that Venu Gopala Swamy’s Abhisheka or consecration is being done.

Our ‘Biligiriranganabetta’ has become ‘B.R. Hills’ and has been completely Anglicised. The presiding deity ‘Ranganatha Swamy’ has become ‘R.N. Swamy’. Do you know ‘D.R. Durga’? It is our Devarayana Durga. Two Swamijis live there – one is Y.N. Swamy and the other is B.N. Swamy, that is, Yoganarasimha Swamy and Bhoganarasimha Swamy. G.N Swamy lives in T. Narsipura, that is, Gunja Narasimha Swamy.

The very attractive and beautiful Krishnaraja Sagar with the Brindavan Gardens has today become the insipid K.R. Sagar. Its shortening has not stopped there. It has been contracted into three letters of the English alphabet and has lost its identity. It is also our misfortune that Srirangapattana has become S.R. Pattana and Ranganatha Swamy has become R.N. Swamy.

It does not matter if the names of individuals are reduced to initials, but there is no need to contract the names of villages. Contracting the names of individuals is necessary; otherwise, people would not be able to call each other. It would be a great adventure to call anyone by his name who attaches the name of 1.is family, name of his village and his father’s name to his name. it would be evening by the time we were to remember and call such names.

The author then talks about a personal incident. After passing the I.P.S. examination he had gone to Mount Abu academy for training. On the first day, all were made to stand in a line and an officer wrote down their names. They were standing on the parade ground and getting their names recorded. Everyone had to tell his full name including the expansion of the initials. The first person in the line said his name was Mahendranarayan Singh; the second person was Devavrata Bandopadhyaya. This continued for some time.

When the author’s turn came to give his name, expanding the initials he said ‘Prativadi Bhayangkara Sampatakumaracharya Ramanujam’. The officer looked at him and in a shrill voice asked him to come to his office and get his name registered. Then he started writing the name of the next candidate. The author says, when the name is so long what else could the officer do.

The author says it is good that we have not applied this tradition of abbreviating words to textbooks, especially history books. If this is done Rana Pratap Singh would become R.P. Singh, Aurangzeb would become A. Jeb and Samudragupta would become S. Gupta. Chandragupta would become C. Gupta, Amatya Rakshasa would become A. Rakshasa, Pulakeshi would become P. Keshi and Mayura Varma would become M. Varma.

In this way nowadays half the name is being hidden in the initials. Sometimes the whole name contracts into the letters of the English alphabet. This is a common feature in schools and colleges. The names of the teachers are adorned on the tongues of the students in the form of English letters.

There is no doubt about the influence of the letters of the English alphabet on our names. This is a new form of bewilderment. We should give this up. Only the use of the Kannada alphabets is safe for us. Still, better would be using the beautiful names in Kannada in their full form. Our pronunciation would be clear and the names would also survive.
